We as a country have a lot of work to do for equality, but it starts in the home.

Martin Luther King Day is so much more than a day off of school for the kids. It is the perfect opportunity to talk about the countries history with inequality and what we can do to continue to make improvements.

Although teachers are absolutely amazing and I am sure they had lessons about Martin Luther King Jr. in school, but you must continue teaching at home and be the example for your little ones.

Here are 5 easy and educational Martin Luther King day activities you can do with your kiddos to begin and/or continue the conversation.

Martin Luther King Day Activities

#1 Watch Kid President’s Video

Your children have likely watched Kid President in school before, they have even seen this exact video. It is nice to start with something they are familiar with and even if they have seen it before ask them what questions they have or what they learned.

#2 Read a Book About Martin Luther King Jr.

If you have a book at home already, great! If not, I have included some favorites here. You can also always Youtube your favorite book and add “read aloud”. This is a read-aloud of My Daddy Martin Luther King Jr.

#3 We’re the Same on the Inside Activity

One of the easiest activities to begin talking about diversity involves 2 eggs. Take a white and a brown egg, crack them on the plate and talk about how they are the same on the inside.

#4 Talk About Diversity With Playdough

Make use of all that playdough you have. If you are extra crazy you could even make your own playdough. Whether you make your own colors or use what you have, this is another easy activity to talk about diversity. This idea came from bonbonbreak where you can also find a playdough recipe.

#5 What Dream Do You and Your Kids Have for the World?

Learning about Martin Luther King Jr. means learning about his famous I Have a Dream speech. When teaching your children about this speech, encourage them that they too are capable of changing the world. Talk about what changes you and them would like to see in the world.

Here are free worksheets you can download and print out for this activity.

Start The Conversation

Regardless of what you do, it is important that you at least start the conversation.
