We all have those traditions that have been passed down and we continue to do year after year. That is an amazing thing and creates amazing memories for your family!

However, this year I challenge you to try some new Christmas traditions with your family. You might find one you love and keep doing it every year!

Here are 12 ideas of new Christmas traditions you can adopt.

New Christmas Traditions

1.

12 or 25 Days of Books

You choose to either wrap 12 or 25 Christmas books and give one a day leading up to Christmas.

The kids are excited about a new gift and you create a chance to read as a family every day.

It’s a win for everyone!

2.

Baking Cookies for the Neighbors

Baking, in general, is a must during the holiday season! However, if you haven’t already started, start making some cookies just for the neighbors.

The kids love baking, it teaches them to give back and your neighbors will love it!

Pro tip: Make some regular chocolate chip cookies or buy some from the store to go along with the ones the kids make. Those are usually cute but not so yummy or edible.

3.

Santa Only Does Stockings

I once had a friend who told me about this Christmas tradition her family had.

In her home, Santa only fills the stockings. The lavish and multiple gifts all come from mom and dad.

Most of us have heard of the idea that Santa should not be the one who gets the credit for the expensive gifts. This way children aren’t wondering why Santa gave their friend an iPad and them a coloring book.

What do you think? Who gets the credit for the big gifts in your home?

4.

Scripture Reading

Whether it is just a night in December or if you choose to make it a part of your Christmas Eve or Christmas day celebrations, find time to read scripture.

Remind everyone what the holiday is truly about and spend time together.

Luke Chapter 2 – The Christmas Story is a great place to start.

5.

Buy a Gift to donate

Giving back is an important part of Christmas.

If we are being honest, sometimes are giving back looks like cleaning out our old toys and clothes and donating them.

Of course, that isn’t a bad thing, but what about donating something brand new.

Buy a gift to take to a nearby shelter or pick a child from the angel tree to support this year.

6.

Take a Christmas Bath

Now, how fun is this!

If your kids are anything like mine then they love a fun bath whether it is toys or bath bombs.

I learned they make special kits just for a Christmas bath! You can buy these bath bombs with toys here.

7.

Christmas Eve Box

I have heard about some families doing one small gift on Christmas eve. I’ve even heard of a special elf coming Christmas eve to deliver the present, but what was new to me this year was a Christmas eve box.

You can have it magically delivered by Santa or put it together yourself. You can include Christmas pajamas, a movie, hot cocoa, popcorn, a small toy, and whatever else you’d like.

Check out these personalized boxes and/or already made boxes.

8.

Reindeer Food

It’s not only Santa that needs a midnight snack! Those Reindeer have been working hard too.

You might already set out some carrots for them but have you ever tried reindeer food?

You can buy some here or make your own with some oats and glitter.

9.

Santa’s Key

Not everyone has a chimney, so what do you do?

When my son was about 4 he began to question how Santa would come in without a chimney, so we decided to leave a key outside for Santa.

However, that meant I had to remember to go get it after he fell asleep because ya know, crazy people.

This magic key is the perfect solution! There are so many options. Here are some of my favorites.

10.

The Christmas Pickle

Have you heard of this one?

The idea is that you place the pickle ornament in the tree and the first to find it gets something special.

Often it is an extra gift or some say a year of good fortune, but you can make it whatever you would like.

If you want to try this new Christmas tradition, you can get this pickle ornament here.

11.

Go to a Tree Farm

Even if you don’t plan on buying one or cutting down a real Christmas tree, going to a tree farm is still a fun tradition.

Plus it makes for the perfect pictures!

Find a day in December where you have some time for a small outing.

12.

Make an Ornament Together

Homemade ornaments will always be better than those bought at Target!

You can use what you have around the house or buy a kit at the store to make an ornament together.

Doing this new Christmas tradition would make for the best keepsakes every year.

Which New Christmas Tradition Will You Adopt?

I hope you love one of these enough to give it a try this year or next.

Regardless of what traditions you have in your family, remember that it’s all about creating memories together and appreciating one another.

What traditions are your favorite and which of these do you think you would try?
