A New Year means New Year’s resolutions.

It is incredibly common for many people to set the same resolutions every year because they find it difficult to stick to them.

Therefore, before we jump into these 10 important New Year’s resolutions for the young mom let me give you a quick tip.

If you truly want to keep your resolutions then you must:

  1. Check-in with yourself frequently to see how they are going.

  2. If you have let one slip, ask yourself why and address that issue.

  3. Set small goals in order to reach a big goal.

Now, let’s talk about these 10 resolutions that every young mom should consider in the new year.

Here are some of my favorite planners to stay to track this year.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Young Mom

#1 Make Self-Care a Priority

I know, I know, easier said than done!

However, giving yourself 15, 30, 60 minutes to really focus on yourself makes an incredible impact.

When you are able to recharge and feel refreshed then you are able to be your best self which reflects on how you are with your family.

It may not be easy in the beginning, but try every day for a week, then 2, and so on. It will become a natural part of your routine.

#2 Get More Sleep

Another resolution that seems impossible, but hear me out.

I bet you are putting the kids to bed, making sure the last thing on the to-do list is crossed off, and then laying down and deciding now is “me-time”.

This looks like you binge-watching Netflix or scrolling Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Now you are up until 12 and exhausted the next day.

Try this. Put your self-care or “me-time” in your daily routine like discussed above and actually go to sleep when you lay down.

You will feel so much better the next day and be surprised at what you can get done!

Now, if you are in that first year with interrupted sleep with a baby I see you. For now, try to sleep instead of scroll and save the scrolling for when the sun is up.

#3 Be More Patient

It’s not only at the start of the New Year that you want to be more patient. You wish and pray for patience daily!

However, this year, let’s make it intentional.

When you are finding a lack of patience, first ask these questions:

  1. Is it me or them?

  2. If it’s me, what has happened today that is causing me to be impatient? Then address that.

  3. If it’s them (maybe they are being a little needier today), ask yourself what has happened or changed that would cause them to act this way. then address that by small conversations and/or uninterrupted one-on-one time.

#4 Be More Present

It is easy to have that never-ending to-do list hovering over your head.

You may be cutting playtime short or completely crossing it off the list today because of all the other things you feel must be done: laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc.

Let me give you a tip. There will ALWAYS be dirty dishes, laundry, and a house that needs to be cleaned. Those come from a home full of people you love.

For now, focus on those people instead of the messes they make.

The day there is no mess is because the people have left. Then you’ll miss the mess.

Also, just put your phone down. Seeing what that person is doing today is not helping you or your little ones 😉

#5 Be Better at Setting Boundaries

This one pertains to your kids and with others.

It is easy to become the person of comfort as the mom and let dad or someone else be the person of discipline. However, you are capable of being both.

This year try to hold strong to the boundaries you set. If you said there will be no more jumping on the couch and they continue to do it, set consequences for the actions and stick to it. Boundaries for children create a sense of security.

For others, learn to say no. You can’t make it to every event with a homemade dish. You can’t always afford every outing. Learn it is ok to say no and those people who love you will understand.

#6 Find a Passion Just for You

It is incredibly easy to find yourself without a passion.

When someone asks “What is your hobby?” you don’t know whether to answer with playing hot wheels or watching kids’ YouTube.

Your life has become all about motherhood and that is understandable, but remember that you were a whole person before you were a mother and that person still matters.

Find something just for her. A hobby or passion that fills her creative cup.

You won’t only find yourself fulfilled, but also setting a great example for your little ones.

#7 Finally Organize That room

We all have that room.

The room that you ignore, throw extra things in, and/or constantly have to tip-toe around.

Instead of setting a goal of total organization for your whole house, just focus on that room.

Finally, get rid of the clutter and organize what you need.

Then do a little happy dance in the extra space.

#8 Organize Your Day-To-Day

We may not be able to plan everything, but a good way to start is with today.

You already got a new calendar for the new year, now let’s put it to good use.

Start at a month’s glance. Pencil in those main events, appointments, school calendar, etc.

Then go day by day. List top 3 things that need to be done today and what you would like to be done.

Whatever doesn’t get done gets moved to tomorrow.

You will be surprised how effective this system is and that to-do list isn’t so daunting.

#9 Be More Confident as a Mother

Doesn’t that sound nice!

With being a young mom, you feel as if you were doubted from the beginning.

There were only a select few people that truly believed in you and others were either skeptical or blatantly told you all the things you wouldn’t be able to do.

This makes it only more difficult to find confidence as a mother now.

I challenge you to write down every moment you have felt like an exceptional mother, small or big moments.

Continue to keep a journal of all of these moments. You will begin to see that you truly are a great mother and perfect for your little ones.

#10 Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

You will never be able to grow your confidence if you continue to compare yourself to others.

First, remember that people show you only what they want you to see. If you are comparing yourself to someone on social media then you are truly only seeing the highlights of their life.

If you are comparing yourself to another mom friend, remember you don’t live in her house and there is no way you can truly know what is going on behind closed doors or in her head.

If you are comparing yourself to an older mom remember you can’t compare your chapter 1 to someone’s chapter 20.

Comparison truly is the thief of joy. Focus on how far you have come. Focus on what you did better today than yesterday. Focus on your growth and you will be amazed at yourself.

Your New New Year’s Resolutions

If thinking about focusing on all of these this year is overwhelming, then pick your favorite or a few.

Write them down somewhere you look every day. Put it on your fridge. Make it the background of your phone. Whatever you have to do to be intentional about keeping your New Year’s Resolutions.

You can always refer back here when needing a reminder of why these resolutions are important and if you need a reminder of why being a young mom is a gift, not a burden then read this blog post here.
